What makes LingQ different

LingQ was created by Steve Kaufmann, a polyglot who speaks 20+ languages. Instead of drilling you with flashcards and game mechanics, LingQ teaches through reading and listening to comprehensible input, the method supported by linguist Stephen Krashen's research.

How it works:

1. Import or choose content: Read articles, books, podcasts, or YouTube videos in your target language.
2. Click unknown words: LingQ highlights new vocabulary. You click to see translations and save them for review.
3. Learn in context: Instead of isolated vocabulary lists, you absorb words naturally through real content you enjoy.
4. Track your progress: LingQ counts your known words and shows your reading/listening stats over time.

It works especially well for intermediate learners who've outgrown beginner apps like Duolingo but can't yet handle native-level content without support.

Meet Steve Kaufmann, the polyglot behind LingQ

A language learner built LingQ. Steve Kaufmann is a Canadian polyglot, born in 1945, who speaks more than 20 languages and learned most of them as an adult, long after the age when people are told it is "too late." A former diplomat and businessman, he co-founded LingQ with his son Mark to turn the method he had used on himself for decades into a tool anyone could use.

That background is a good reason to take LingQ seriously. The platform is built around the way Kaufmann became fluent: reading and listening to large amounts of real content in the target language, saving unknown words, and meeting them again and again in context. If that approach suits you, a LingQ subscription (with the coupons above) gives you his method in a tool.

Which languages LingQ supports

LingQ supports over 40 languages, from popular choices to less common ones:

• Asian Languages: Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Thai
• European Languages: Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian
• Other: Arabic, Turkish, Russian, Polish, Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, and more

The content library varies by language. Popular languages like Japanese and Spanish have huge libraries, while smaller languages have growing collections. Because you can import content, you can always add your own material.

LingQ vs other language platforms

How LingQ compares with the alternatives:

• LingQ vs Duolingo: Duolingo is gamified and better for absolute beginners. LingQ is better for intermediate learners who want to read real content.
• LingQ vs Preply: Preply offers live tutors, while LingQ is self-study. Many serious learners use both: LingQ for daily input and Preply for weekly speaking practice.
• LingQ vs Cambly: Cambly focuses on English conversation with native speakers. LingQ covers 40+ languages with a reading/listening focus.
