italki Promo Code 2026: How to Get $5 Credit and Cheaper Lessons

italki doesn't publish promo codes, and its old promotions page now returns an error. The codes passed around on coupon sites (CF5, SAVE5OFF and similar) come from user forum posts, not from italki. What italki does offer in 2026 is a referral credit: $5 for you and $10 for the friend who invited you, once your purchases reach $20. Add discounted trial lessons and tutors from $4 an hour, and it's one of the cheapest ways to get a private language teacher.

We checked each point below on italki's own pages on October 14, 2026.

Way to save	What you get	Conditions
Referral credit	$5 for you, $10 for your friend	New user; your purchases must reach $20 in italki Credits; redeem a code within 24 hours of registering

Teacher packages	A lower per-lesson price set by the teacher	Not every teacher offers them; use within 6 months
Community tutors	Conversation practice from about $4 an hour	No formal teaching certification

How the italki referral credit works

This is the only discount italki documents for new students. From the terms on its referral page:

• A friend who already uses italki sends you their invite link or referral code.
• If you've already registered, you can still redeem their code within 24 hours of signing up, as long as you haven't bought anything yet.
• Once your purchases reach $20 in italki Credits, you get $5 and your friend gets $10.
• Credits bought with gift cards or coupons don't count toward the $20. Each person can be referred once and earn the reward once.

Our italki link is a partner link, not a referral link, so it doesn't carry the $5 credit. If you know someone who takes lessons on italki, ask for their link before you sign up.

What italki lessons cost

Teachers set their own prices, and you pay per lesson. There's no subscription. italki says most lessons cost between $4 and $25, and the Spanish teacher search we checked filters from $4 to $120 an hour.

There are two kinds of teachers:

• Professional teachers have teaching qualifications that italki verifies. italki puts their usual price at $10 to $40 per lesson.
• Community tutors are native speakers or advanced learners who offer conversation practice without formal certification, usually $4 to $20 an hour.

You pay with italki Credits, which are tied to the US dollar. italki says it adds no booking fee at checkout, but your bank or payment provider may charge one when you buy credits. Payment options include card, PayPal and Skrill.

Trial lessons: the cheapest way to start

Trials aren't free, but they're cheap. Most teachers offer a 30-minute trial at 30 to 50% below their normal rate, and italki suggests trying up to three teachers before you commit. Among the first 20 Spanish teachers listed, trial prices ranged from $5 to $18, and most were under $7.

Packages, credits and refunds

• Packages: many teachers sell bundles of lessons at a lower per-lesson rate. We saw packages marked 19% and 23% off. You have six months to use a package; unused lessons return to your wallet as credit.
• Credit expiry: credits expire if your account is inactive for more than 12 months. Any activity resets the clock.
• Refunds: credits you've bought can't be refunded. If a lesson is canceled, declined or expires, the full amount returns to your wallet.
• italki Plus: an optional $5.99-a-month subscription ($59.99 a year) with a 30-day free trial for new users. You don't need it to book lessons.

How to pay as little as possible on italki

1. Get a referral link from an italki user before you register, then spend your first $20 to unlock the $5 credit.
2. Book two or three trials to find a teacher you like at the price you want.
3. Use a community tutor for conversation practice and a professional teacher only for grammar or exam prep.
4. Buy a package once you've settled on a teacher, if they offer one.
5. Stay active so your credits don't expire.
